Eden

What can we imagine about "Eden". As a significant event in human's God-relationship, we can understand that it exceeds the parameters of space and time and stretches ultimately to the origins of life. Our imaginations know this to be true, but the difficulty of knowing is extreme.

Are we, however, God-like (good) without the prompting of evil? Do we need evil in order to be good? To make the point, a yellow-black shape has been woven into the story. Evil is an amorphous, ever-mutating, wily form of totally negative intentions. Evil is the adversary that humanizes good.

Finally, emerging from the background of cosmic particles, including the competition with evil, four apples join together to assert the reality of a fruitful universe, and so we dream. With this union comes the promise and the certainty of perpetual existence. Did God make a mistake? Not likely.

Bubbles

This composition is composed of three vertical sections with one vertical sub-section. Each section is a contrasting element, with the middle bridge section the most severe. We can see that the bubbles on the right have an exaggerated reference to the small and large bubbles in the left section. The geometric horizontals/diagonals of the left sub-section vividly contrast with the unpredictable bubble movements on the right. All sections are colored related.

The trouble with compositional descriptions is that they tell us very little about the artist's intentions. At this point, understanding becomes really tricky and hard. What we see, hear, or read in a work of art is a record of the artist's choices. Interpretation of those choices is a complicated process. That is why works of art have a long shelf life, equal to the depth of the human mind.

Empire

I just finished the composition "Red Sky" that took me a year to complete. It required many hours of fine tuning to make it worth looking at. This is not the case with "Empire", which took shape quickly, unchallenged by compositional difficulties.

Consistent with the subject matter, "Empire" exploits four vertical columns, three of which emphasize the majestic reach of the Empire State Building. The fourth column pictures effervescence rising like bubbles in a champagne flute. This section compliments the night lighted references to the Empire State Building.

Finally, the sentiment of good feeling is expressed by the rose. "Empire" does not comment on the realities of New York City life (or the scumbag who lives in Trump Tower), but it does intend to represent the city's magic. 

Good Teeth

The title, "Good Teeth", has little to do with the underlying message of this composition. Humorous in its intention, the title hides an insidious and pervasive aspect of our world – the sexualizing of nearly every aspect of human existence. Popular with advertisers, sexualized images are used to influence our choices and self-concepts.

Do we only exist in order to enrich the marketplace? Of course not. What a foolish idea. Humans have not evolved without transcendent aspirations and sublime intentions. To suggest otherwise is laughable. "Good Teeth" sees this for what it is and laughs out loud. Perhaps laughter is the great defender.

Halo

Compositional Observations:

(a) This composition exploits a geometric vocabulary of essential shapes: two circles, two squares, and one triangle. Nothing can be added or subtracted.

(b) “Halo” emphasizes the rapid recession of diagonal elements, with a deep space focus. All other elements trap the viewer's eye on this singular focal point.

(c) At the bottom, a heavily-weighted black seats the image. There are no other positions possible.

(d) Orange is the dominant color, accentuated by its complementary blue. Red and yellow-green form a secondary support position with a curving line pattern. Black and gray are non-colors which accentuate the design’s colored sections.

(e) "Halo" will likely have a hypnotic effect on the viewer, as fixated images have the extraordinary power to capture our attention and promote introspection.
